.:Chapter One:.

The Game Begins

Josh had finally lost his mind, Gabby Rush thought as she pulled the bright blue jersey that was handed to her over her head. There was no else other than him that would constantly try and find different things to keep them entertained; and by keeping them locked into a mall to play a game was one thing she had never anticipated. Strip Beer Pong? Sure. Strip Poker? Absolutely. Strip anything was up Josh's alley. But this? No way.

Gabby shook her head, dirty blonde hair flying as Emily Bloom sighed heavily, crossing her arms over her chest. She knew the young Asian woman was about to complain about something, it was her go to move. "If I knew we were going to get locked in the mall as a game rather than the shopping spree I was hoping for, I so wouldn't have come!" Emily declared.

And there it was.

Gabby looked over at Josh Washington, who caught her eye and grinned, causing her chuckle under her breath, knowing he had anticipated the same thing. But that was Emily, someone who was very used to getting her way and making it known when she didn't.

"Well, if you've got anyone to blame then all fingers should go to Joshy over here," Chris Fleiss said, clasping his hand down onto Josh's shoulder. "He's the one that it would be a good idea to spend the entire night in a mall that has no cell reception." As if to prove his point, he pulled the gadget from his pocket and waved it around.

"Aww, I'm sure it's killing you," Ashley Stineman teased, sticking out her lower lip in a pout. Chris rolled his eyes, the blueness appearing brighter as his cheeks flushed, putting his phone away as the others laughed. She adjusted the beanie that sat over her hair. "I think this is going to be fun!"

"So do I," Sam Panettiere agreed with a nod. "The cash prize doesn't hurt either." She grinned softly as murmurs of agreement rippled through the group.

"That's my girl, thinking about her monetary gain," Josh said with a proud smile. He then held out his arms as he addressed his friends "And how long do you think it was going to take before you all sat back on your couches, paused your pornos, and wondered what you could be doing to have fun?" He then paused, grasping his chin for a moment before holding his hands up, palms out. "Okay, nothing is more fun than porn. But this is the second best thing you could be doing on a Friday night."

"Ugh! I'm so not related to you," Beth declared, slapping herself on the forehead at her brother's antics. She looked over at her twin sister, Hannah, who shook her head in agreement. "I swear things were much easier when we pretended he didn't exist."

"Well, at least my girl appreciates me," Josh said, feigning hurt. He feigned grabbing Gabby by the chin to kiss her, making her shriek with laughter and back away as their friends immediately jeered and cat called them.

"Okay. Okay. Cool it, Josh." Gabby pushed Josh away from her and mimicked his earlier stance, holding her hands up. She was glad her skin was dark enough to hide the redness that was bound to show. Josh always had one thing on his mind. "Once the game starts,"—she gestured back and forth between them—"this is on pause. I like to win more than anything!"

"Considering the last time we played Monopoly and I ended up with the racecar thrown at my forehead, I think I would much rather be on your team," Mike Munroe said. He reached up a hand and gently rubbed at the spot, as if he could still feel the tiny piece of metal peg him directly in the center of his forehead. He then glanced down at the red jersey that was pushed upon him.

"You had your chance for an out," Matt Fisher pointed out. "But, as usual, you had to try and be the best at everything." There was a light edge to his tone that Gabby couldn't help but notice. So much so that Jessica Martin, the last of their group, narrowed her eyes at Emily and wrapped her arms through Mike's, causing Emily to do the same to Matt, though she smirked at Jessica in reply.

Jessica shot back with her own smirk. "In more ways than one," she agreed.

Emily looked away.

Gabby sighed one more. She should've known even a game that sounded to be as fun as the one they were about to play wouldn't bring them together. Then again the thought of being able to beat each other up probably wouldn't be able to bring them together. That's what happened when boyfriends were 'stolen'. It was common knowledge around the school that Mike and Emily used to go out but then something had happened between the two of them—maybe Mike had gotten tired of Emily's domineering attitude—and they broke up, causing Jessica to start dating him afterwards while Emily moved onto Mike. As far as Gabby was concerned, she was surprised they were all able to still be friends, pushing their tensions aside the best they could, but it came up every now and again.

What better place for it to rear its ugly head one more than during a scavenger hunt type game when they were all supposed to be on the same team .Truthfully, Gabby had no idea how they were all friends; Mike was the promiscuous class president, Matt was the loveable jock, Jessica was the provocative dreamer, Sam the adventurous peace-maker, Ashley the smart sweetheart, Emily the sharp witted bitch, Chris the methodical joker, Josh the complex fun-lover, Hannah the shy but trustworthy one, and Beth despite being the younger twin was the protective one—to her sister mostly, but to anyone within their group.

Then there was Gabby; at first look at her small 5'0 frame, with dyed dirty-blonde hair, tanned complexion, freckles, and olive green eyes—all from her black mother and white father—she didn't look to be anyone that would be a threat, but she had a wicked tempera and a energetic personality that meshed with the rest of them. However that easily meshed into a competitive personality that kept her friends from wanting to play games with her on more than one occasion. It was a miracle she had been invited to play along with the others.

"Thanks for giving us yet another unwanted view into your sex lives," Beth teased.

"Hey, if you've got it, flaunt it." Jessica threw in a wink and a flirty giggle to add to the comment.

Emily rolled her eyes. "God, I can't believe I'm going to be on the same team as them."

"It's better than being on this team," Sam reminded her, tilting her head to the side as a soft smile came to her face. "Gabby is so competitive she'd probably sabotage her own team."

"That only happened once! And in my defense you were all moving too slowly."

"It was fourth grade dodge ball, Gabs, not the Olympics."

"Okay! Okay!" Josh held up his hands to silence his friends. He looked around at the organizer of the event, Dr. Hill, who was waving them over. "The game's about to start." He rubbed his hands together as the group walked over to hear the rules. "Are you all ready to party like pornstars?"

The others groaned, used to Josh's euphemisms and enthusiasm for all things sex. He even went over to Chris and Ashley, throwing his arms around their shoulders, pressing his weight onto them. "You know, the heat of the moment from a game like this can really get some things going." He wagged his eyebrows between the two, causing them to look at each other, blush, and look away.

"Josh!" Hannah grabbed onto his arm and pulled him away from the two shyer friends. "Leave them alone. You're not helping."

Be then grabbed Gabby's attention. "Gabs, control him."

Gabby's eyebrows rose. "Me?!"

"He's your friend," Beth pointed out.

"He's your brother."

"Unfortunately you can't pick your family," Matt broke in. "And either way you're going to be stuck with him one he and Gabby get married." She reached out and punched him on the arm, causing him to laugh and back away.

"And I say marriage is for losers," Mike broke in. He grinned, tightening his grasp around Jessica. "Live fast, die young, I don't need a bride on my arm to do that."

"Like you could handle it."

The group came to a stop in front of Dr. Hill and all listened quietly as the rules to the game were explained to them. They were to find totems scattered throughout the three floored mall, which would be collected and then arranged on the ground floor into a specific pattern to win. To make the game harder there were going to be people chasing them around, who would be trying to rip off the tags that were attached to their backs; the wendigos. When a team member's tag was ripped off their back then that person became a wendigo and would put on a gray jersey to signify themselves from the others, and they would go after their former teammates. Whoever was the last ones to survive long enough to put the totems together at the designated area on the ground floor would split a cash prize of five thousand dollars.

The teams were Emily, Matt, Mike, Jess, Hannah, Beth—the red team—versus Chris, Ashley, Josh, Sam, Gabby—the blue team. They would be started on the third floor and second floors respectively and wouldn't know when the wendigos would start to go after them. They were brought to their starting points, given walkie-talkies that would allow the teams to converse among themselves when looking for the totems, and given their starting clues.

A rhythmic dinging sounded over the mall's PA system.

The game had begun.

A/N: This is essentially like the game, placed in a mall setting instead, a lot less actual death and a lot more humor. I got the idea after watching the Korean show Running Man. Hope you guys like it.

For those wondering pairings are: Chris/Ashley, Josh/OC, Matt/Emily, and Sam/Mike/Jess with a teeny bit of Hannah/Mike thrown in there. Also, it has some of the quotes from the game because it should be pretty funny here.

Cheers,
